North Carolina - Alex Lee Inc. has bought 20 bi-lo stores from Southeastern Grocers, and parent company Bi Lo will sell 23 more stores as it continues to phase out the South Carolina-born brand. Alex-Lee said she will convert the stores she bought into Lowes Foods, as well as a number of other stores in North Carolina and Georgia.
The others will move to Winston-Salem's parent company, which acquired the Winston-based Pee Dee - W. Lee Flowers Co. it bought last year - and a number of other companies.
The sale leaves four Bi-Lo grocery stores in the Charleston area, and Alex Lee plans to operate 15 stores - five of them under the KJ Market IGA brand. After the sale, Southeastern Grocers will acquire 85% of the Lo shops across the state. The two shops on the corner of North Charleston Boulevard and South Main Street will be converted into KK - Market - I GAG.
Fla.-based Southeastern Grocers said it will continue to consider options for the remaining bi-lo locations, including more sales. Before the deal closes, Alex Lee said he plans to meet with current BI-LO employees at the stores to discuss employment opportunities. The company said it would meet with the company in November to discuss further employment opportunities and the possibility of a future sale once the transition was completed. AlexLee plans to meet with all current employees before and during the sale process, he said.
